The Top 52 Montreal Songs of 2024

Tracks by Marie Davidson, Colin Stetson and Kaytranada are among our favourite local songs of the year.

In a way, 2024 was an even more frustrating year for Montreal’s music community than 2023.

Perhaps the biggest, and most maddening, blow to the scene was the announcement of la Tulipe’s impending closure due to noise complaints — sparking a wave of protests and outrage across the city in support of the 111-year-old concert hall. Even if mayor Valérie Plante responded swiftly by exempting bars, restaurants and venues from noise bylaws, it still felt too little, too late. We also saw an unbearably hot Osheaga weekend, a continued cost of living crisis, and that insufferable orange man using a Céline Dion song at his rally without permission.

Musically, however, it was yet another productive one for many local artists, with a plethora of the city’s most established acts releasing new music this past year. This meant that, consequently, it felt as if more heart-wrenching cuts had to be made on my end than ever. Most notably, we got a final album from Les Cowboys Fringants, a track from which will appear on this list.

Representation from anglophone, francophone and allophone communities can be found here, whether performing in their native language, their second one, or instrumentally. Here are the 52 songs I feel represent the best in Montreal music for 2024 (December 2023 releases I didn’t include last year are also eligible here).
