Canada to make contraceptives and morning-after pill free

Trudeau reaffirmed that the Liberals “are proudly pro-choice, and always will be.”

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has made a statement about the plan to make contraceptives and the morning-after free in Canada. Evoking abortion rights, Trudeau reaffirmed that his government and the Liberal party “are proudly pro-choice, and always will be.”

Universal access to contraceptives for women, as well as diabetes medications, is part of the first phase of the National Pharmacare Program.

In a previous statement, Trudeau noted that part of the impetus for introducing free contraceptives was levelling the field for women.

“Your right to choose shouldn’t depend on your income. So, we’re going to make contraceptives free in Canada.”

The Canadian government previously moved to relieve the cost of women’s products by making tampons and pads free in all federally regulated buildings.
