François Legault does not respect the basic democratic right to protest

François Legault has no business telling the SPVM to dismantle the encampment at McGill. Once again, the premier sticks his neck where it doesn’t belong, interfering in the affairs of a university he’s defunding, in a city he otherwise doesn’t care about.

Legault has shown his true colours by asking the Montreal police to do what cops have done this week to students in L.A. and New York, and this a day after a superior court judge decided the protests weren’t interfering with students’ ability to attend class. He opposes the basic democratic right to protest, the autonomy of cities to manage their own internal affairs and the independent judiciary’s ability to make judgements on the law of the land.

This is a mask-off moment for political leaders the world over, and most have chosen not to condemn a very obvious campaign of ethnic cleansing. Legault has gone a step further, choosing to advance his own dictatorial agenda.
