Quebec’s union of unions, the Front commun, announced today that full-day strikes will take place from Nov. 21 to 23, while 65,000 Quebec teachers are due to begin an unlimited strike on Nov. 23, unless negotiations with the government are successful.

In his first tweet of the day, as 420,000 public sector workers across the province are on strike, Quebec Premier François Legault stated, “An economic boom in sight in Quebec!”

The timing of Legault’s tweet, with today’s strike disrupting health care, education and social services until 10:30 a.m., couldn’t have been accidental. Quebec’s union of unions, the Front commun, announced this morning that full-day strikes will take place from Nov. 21 to 23, while 65,000 Quebec teachers are due to begin an unlimited strike on Nov. 23, unless negotiations with the government are successful. Quebec has offered a 10.3% salary increase over five years while unions are asking for a 20% increase over three years.

Legault made the statement this morning while sharing a La Presse article lauding the premier’s recruitment of Hydro-Québec CEO Michael Sabia, who replaced Sophie Brochu. Sabia is said to be pursuing a more “ambitious” action plan for the company, focusing on wealth creation as well as decarbonization.
