30% drop in gun crime in Montreal this year

“We are moving in the right direction, but we must not take anything for granted.”

According to a police report, gun crime in Montreal is down nearly 30% this year compared with crime statistics from 2022.

Since January, gun murders are down from 14 in 2022 to 8 this year, attempted murders down to 28 from 40 and incidents involving a gun being fired are down to 73 from 101 — a 29.7% decrease overall.

Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante commented on the downward trend in gun crime, lauding a growing integration of police work and that of community organizations for helping to prevent crime — but also cautioning that this progress is only a small step.

“We are moving in the right direction, but we must not take anything for granted.”
