The White Lotus Canada Golden Globes nominations

Aubrey Plaza and Jennifer Coolidge are both nominated for Golden Globes for The White Lotus.

The nominations are out, but can the Golden Globes save their reputation?

The ceremony will return to NBC after not airing anywhere last year, but the Hollywood Foreign Press Association may be too tainted by scandal for its awards to be relevant again.

Despite not even airing last year, the Golden Globes still hold on for dear life. This morning they announced the 2023 nominations, which feature a lot of expected choices, with some old-school out-of-left-field choices typical of the mysterious awards show body (the Hollywood Foreign Press Association). While the last two years have been more than contentious for the Golden Globes, they’ve secured broadcast rights again and will be shown live on NBC with host Jerrod Carmichael — albeit on a Tuesday (Jan. 10).

After two years in literal darkness, it’s impossible to say whether or not the Golden Globes will have the same outsized impact it once did on the Oscars. Even so, at least on the movie front, The Banshees of Inisherin, Everything Everywhere All at Once, Babylon and The Fabelmans have the most nominations — potentially setting them up as major players this awards season.

There have been efforts to clean up the show’s image, but it won’t be easy to escape the past. Brendan Fraser, nominated for The Whale and a favourite contender, will not be attending the ceremony after he alleged that he was sexually assaulted by one of its former presidents, Philip Berk, who has denied the allegation. Many other insiders suggest that the efforts to fix up the show’s image are also a little too late and that any nomination or prize from the Golden Globes will be tainted.

Nonetheless, here are the nominees.
