Quebec Conservatives pledge to end SAQ monopoly

The Conservatives have adopted a campaign promise that the CAQ broke in 2019.

Quebec Conservative Party leader Éric Duhaime held a press conference today pledging to end the monopoly of the province’s liquor board, the SAQ (Société des alcools du Québec), if elected on Oct. 3.

As a way to boost business development in the regions, the Conservatives said they would deregulate the sale of alcohol in other types of stores, such as bakeries, delis and dépanneurs.

During the 2018 election campaign, the CAQ promised to explore putting an end to the SAQ monopoly, but dropped the idea after they came to power in 2019.
