Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante has delivered a message in solidarity with the women of Iran.

Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante has released a statement in solidarity with Iranian women, following police brutality at protests in Iran that were sparked by the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini. Amini died suspiciously in police custody after being arrested by a morality squad for not wearing a hijab. Demonstrations have followed, across Iran and around the world, since Amini’s funeral on Sept. 17.

Plante said that she is appalled by the scenes from Iran, and that Montrealers stand with Iranian women as they fight for their freedom.

“I am appalled by the scenes that have been reaching us from Iran for the past few days. To all Iranian women who are fighting for their freedom, Montreal is with you. Women, life, freedom.”
