Valérie Plante calls for more severe sentences for arms trafficking

Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante has released a statement calling for more severe sentences for arms trafficking in order to discourage criminal groups from trying to bring illegal weapons into the city and country.

Plante was reacting to a story in La Presse revealing that a man who was arrested after importing 248 handguns from the United States was released after spending just one year in prison.

Plante referred to the trafficking of weapons as a “scourge that we must fight at all levels to protect our communities.”
