Shapovalov: The Leafs would have a Stanley Cup if Carey Price was their goalie

The Canadian tennis star spoke about his admiration for Price, despite being a Leafs fan.

In an interview with TVA Sports on Monday, Canadian tennis star Denis Shapovalov expressed his admiration for Carey Price, despite being a Maple Leafs fan. Shapovalov, who named the Canadiens as the first thing he thinks of when he thinks of Montreal (and named Price as his favourite Hab), said he believes Toronto would have won a Stanley Cup (at some point over the past decade or so) if Price had been the goalie for the Leafs rather than the Habs.

“I’m a Maple Leafs fan so we’re rivals. I really wish that Carey (Price) was playing for the Leafs. I really feel like we would have a Stanley Cup right now. I’m jealous of your team.”

Shapovalov, Cult MTL’s August cover star, is currently in Montreal to play in the National Bank Open tennis tournament. After losing the first set to Australian Alex de Minaur last night, rain suspended play in the midst of a second-set tiebreak at Stade IGA. Shapovalov and de Minaur will resume their match this afternoon, following centre-court matches by fellow Canadians Alexis Galarneau and Vasek Pospisil.
