Alternative facts: 30% of Canadians believe “facts are subjective”

A study has found that women over 54 are most susceptible to believing that facts are debatable.

According to a study by the Angus Reid Institute, 30% of Canadians believe that facts are subjective, changing from one person to another. A majority of Canadians, 70%, know that facts are real established concepts that you can’t argue against.

Unsurprisingly, 91% of Canadians say they worry about people’s ability to figure out what information on the internet is real and what is fake.

“Oxford Languages chose ‘post-truth’ as its word of the year in 2016, after U.S. President Donald Trump was elected and began routinely making false and misleading claims. Some have begun to call recent years the ‘post-truth era,’ as the rapid spread of misinformation through social media clouds what is and isn’t true.”

Older Canadians are more likely than younger ones to believe that facts are subjective, with women over 54 being the most likely to agree.
