“I find Pierre Poilievre amusing. He’s a smart guy but he’s also very abrasive”

Tom Mulcair commented on the rumours that the Ottawa MP is considering a run for CPC leadership.

Political commentator and former NDP leader Tom Mulcair spoke with CTV News Network last night regarding the resignation of Erin O’Toole, and the rumour that MP Pierre Poilievre is considering a run to be the next leader of the Conservative Party of Canada. Mulcair noted that Pierre Poilievre “thinks he’s got what it takes” to lead the party, but may be too abrasive to fare well in a general election.

“I find him amusing. He’s a smart guy but he’s also very abrasive. Now that works to some extent in dealing with a political adversary, but when you’re trying to attract people, there’s an old saying that you attract more flies with honey than with vinegar and Pierre will have to learn to buy some honey and not just use vinegar if he wants to be a leader who can reach out and attract new Canadians if ever he were to get the job.”

Mulcair also spoke about other possible leaders of the CPC, including “somebody from outside the current crop in the Conservative party,” like former politicians Lisa Raitt and Jon Baird.

Earlier today, MP Candice Bergen was named the interim leader of the Conservative Party of Canada.
