Conservative caucus votes 73 to 45 to remove Erin O’Toole as leader

Erin O’Toole has fallen and he can’t get up.

Conservative Party of Canada leader Erin O’Toole has lost the support of his party in an anonymous caucus leadership vote, 73 to 45 — that’s 62% in favour of removing O’Toole as leader, 38% for keeping him.

The vote was a culmination of a prolonged post-mortem following the party’s loss in the Sept. 2021 election, and seems to have come to a head due to the perceived lack of a “coherent” response to the trucker convoy protest in Ottawa. On Monday, Calgary MP Bob Benzen formally called for a caucus review of O’Toole’s leadership.

According to CBC, O’Toole has recently spoken about how the Conservative Party of Canada had two possible paths to take: “angry, negative and extreme” or “optimistic and inclusive and reflecting the Canada of 2022.” O’Toole championed the latter approach, which might be telling as to what direction the party could take now.
