Real Quebec COVID numbers estimated to be between 33K and 58K daily

A new study estimates that daily case numbers in the province are five to eight times higher than the PCR results being reported.

The Centre interuniversitaire de recherche en analyze des organizations (CIRANO) estimates that daily numbers of new COVID-19 cases in Quebec in recent days range from 33,000 to 58,000, five to eight times higher than results of PCR tests being reported.

The study involved a representative sampling of 3,000 Quebecers, surveyed between Jan. 13 and 18, and takes into account both self-diagnosis and positive rapid test results, which are not being incorporated into the daily case counts reported by Santé Québec, Santé Montréal and the INSPQ.

Given that the general population no longer has access to PCR tests, and can use rapid tests at home instead (if/when they are available), pandemic numbers in the province have not been inaccurate for weeks. Government officials have had to rely on the numbers of hospitalizations, ICU admissions and deaths, as well as internal projections, to guide policy.
