excess mortality Quebec

Legault: Stricter restrictions have reduced excess mortality in Quebec below ROC, U.S.

A reminder that François Legault discourages comparing Quebec pandemic statistics with those of other regions (except when they work in his favour).

François Legault has shared statistics on excess mortality in Quebec, comparing them with numbers for the rest of Canada and the United States. Last week, the Premier contrasted Quebec and Ontario ICU numbers but warned against comparing numbers of pandemic fatalities across provinces due to the fact that Quebec counts all COVID deaths without factoring in “excess mortality.”

According to the Institut de la Statistique du Québec (ISQ), excess mortality in Quebec since Jan. 2020 has been 3.4%, lower than in Ontario (5%), the rest of Canada (5.4%) and the United States (15%). (For more on excess mortality, please click here.)

Legault said that Quebec chose to implement stricter restrictions and safety measures and that “Quebecers have respected the measures more.”
