Montreal homeless man dies under NDG overpass during extreme cold warning

The 74-year-old man was found dead as homeless shelters make urgent appeals for assistance.

Montreal first responders confirmed the death of a homeless man on Monday evening following a report that someone was unwell under the overpass at St-Jacques and Highway 20 in NDG. The 74-year-old man was found dead shortly after 6 p.m., when an extreme cold warning was in effect. Temperatures dipped to -26C on Monday night, and -35C with wind chill by Tuesday morning.

Montreal homeless shelters such as Chez Doris and the Old Brewery Mission have expressed concern due to lack of staff, high demand for overnight spaces and the spread of the Omicron variant.

This morning, Nakuset of Resilience Montreal shared a post stressing the dire need for more indoor shelters. It’s been nearly a year since the death of Raphaël André prompted outrage over the plight of homeless in Montreal during the pandemic and the curfew.
