Habs comment on racist incidents targeting Jordan Subban and Boko Imama

“As we prepare to mark Black History Month, we reiterate that racism has no place in hockey and in our society.”

Two racist incidents in the AHL and ECHL this month have drawn attention to the continued presence of racism in hockey culture, and prompted a statement from the Montreal Canadiens today.

The AHL’s Krystof Hrabik has been suspended for 30 games while the ECHL’s Jacob Panetta has been suspended indefinitely and cut from his team. Both players reportedly made racist “monkey” gestures during games, directed at Boko Imama and Jordan Subban, respectively.

The Habs condemned such behaviour, whether it be based on race, religion, gender or sexual orientation, and committed to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment free from discrimimation.

P.K. Subban also tweeted in support of his younger brother Jordan, calling out Panetta and sharing a video of Saturday night’s incident.
