Half of Canadians say alcohol abuse has become a problem in their social circles

3 in 10 also say the same about drug abuse.

According to a new study by the Angus Reid Institute, half of Canadians (47%) say that alcohol abuse is a problem among their social circle; 3 in 10 (29%) say the same about drug abuse.

“As the pandemic has dragged on, clinicians say substance use has increased. Overdoses and alcohol-related deaths have risen since 2020, according to Statistics Canada, and doctors are noticing patients are drinking more than ever.”

The study also found that 35% of Canadians say depression and anxiety are a major problem in their social circles, while another 48% say it’s “an issue they’re exposed to.”

When asked how they were feeling over the past few weeks, the top word that Canadians used to describe their state of mind was “fatigued,” at 48%.
