Quebec announces curfew, closure of restaurants, ban on all private gatherings

The new restrictions will be in effect as of 5 p.m. on Dec. 31.

In a Thursday evening press conference, Quebec Premier François Legault announced that a curfew (from 10 p.m. till 5 a.m.) and a ban on all private gatherings will be implemented across the province as of tomorrow.

All Quebec restaurants will also be forced to close their dining rooms, and retail stores will be mandated to close on Sundays for the next three weekends. Indoors sports are cancelled, and all places of worship will be closed except for funerals, where capacity will be limited to 25 people. The work-from-home order remains in effect.

Legault also announced that all schools will remain closed until Jan. 17, a one-week extension of the holiday break for elementary and high schools, which was previously set at Jan. 10. The new measure will also apply to CEGEPs and universities, though online learning can go ahead prior to Jan. 17 where possible. Regular daycares will remain open, but school daycares will be functional for essential workers only.
