Quebec to establish sexual and domestic violence tribunal

“We want all victims to be able to obtain the justice they deserve. We have arrived there as a society.”

The Quebec government tabled a bill today that would create a tribunal specialized in crimes involving sexual and domestic violence. Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante saluted the provincial government on Bill 92, which follows a spike in femicides and cases of domestic violence in the city and across the province.

“We welcome the decision by the Quebec government to move forward with a bill to create a tribunal specializing in sexual and domestic violence. Great progress for the victims, who will finally be entitled to support adapted to their situation.”

—Valérie Plante

As announced in August, the tribunal put forward in Bill 92 will be permanent, deployed throughout Quebec and established within the criminal and penal division of the Court of Quebec. Quebec Premier François Legault highlighted that the tribunal will be beneficial to victims and mentioned that his government is looking into the training of judges.

“With the new court, we want to offer better support to victims before, during and after the legal process. We no longer want the legal process to be considered an insurmountable ordeal. We want all victims to be able to obtain the justice they deserve. We have arrived there as a society.”

The bill is the result of a proposal from a committee of experts on the support of victims of sexual assault and domestic violence, which submitted 190 recommendations to the government in December.
