PHOTOS: Community, politicians at forefront of Montreal Pride March 2021

This year’s Pride Week finale was low on corporate presence, but heavy on politicians.

On Sunday afternoon, an unconventional end to Pride Week in Montreal took place on Parc Avenue and Ste-Catherine Street. In place of a parade with floats and large crowds (which was not feasible due to the pandemic), Montreal Pride went back to its activist roots with a Pride March, focusing on issues important to the LGBTQ2IA+ community, and on unity. The lack of a large corporate presence and spectators gave it the feel and appearance of more of a casual community event — a refreshing change of pace, though the community will undoubtedly welcome the return of the parade next year. Politicians from all levels of government were also on hand, including federal NDP leader Jagmeet Singh and Liberal MPs Rachel Bendayan and Mélanie Joly (the Minister of Economic Development and Official Languages), Québec Solidaire’s Manon Massé and Gabriel Nadeau Dubois as well as Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante. Even the CAQ sent a contingent of MNAs.
