Majority of Canadians support forcing Walmart, Costco to close non-essential sections

Out of fairness to small businesses that have had to shut down their operations.

According to the latest weekly survey by Leger Marketing released today, December 15, 57% of Canadians support forcing superstores/Big Box retailers, such as Costco and Walmart, to close the non-essential sections of their stores (except for essential items such as food or pharmacy) to in-person shopping in fairness to smaller businesses that have had to shut down their operations due to the pandemic. 32% of Canadians would oppose this measure. This comes as a number of regions across the country are in lockdown — four in Ontario alone — and new restrictions on non-essential businesses are expected to be announced for Quebec today.

Conversely, a much lower percentage of Americans would support forcing large retailers to close their non-essential sections in fairness to small businesses, at 32%.
