Theaster Gates

DHC/ART and artist talk speaker series Art Speaks invites internationally renowned Chicago-based multidisciplinary artist Theaster Gates to the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts to discuss the upcoming 2018 exhibition series The Black Madonna, for which his research into the depictions of black women throughout history has led him everywhere from European churches to the archives of Jet and Ebony magazines. 1379A Sherbrooke W., 6:30 p.m., free

Quebec City-based choreographer Alan Lake’s company Factori(e) brings their newest work Le cri des méduses to Place des Arts for a six-show engagement, most of which is already sold out — but there are a few spots still available for tonight’s kickoff performance with visually enthralling set design complete with sculptural installations and video projections adding new dimensions to the dancers’ moves. 175 Ste-Catherine W., 8 p.m., $30–$44

Club Balattou hosts the 12th annual Syli d’Or de la Musique du Monde, a series of free showcases of new world-music talent presented by the Nuits d’Afrique festival, running through April 26. Tonight and tomorrow night, you can catch local Afro-pop/reggae artist Kenzow. See more about the competitive aspect of the event (and how the audience acts as jury) here. 4372 St-Laurent, 8:30 p.m., free

A group of local musicians is banding together to raise money for the Native Women’s Shelter of Montreal with a benefit concert tonight at Casa del Popolo featuring performances by Gens Chrétiens (with special guest Tamara Filyavich), experimental wind instrument duo Darkwinds and a duet between Stefan Christoff and Émilie Monnet. 4873 St-Laurent, 9 p.m., $10 donation suggested
