The sick, sick week in gigs

Music legends, killer local bands, Montreal’s most rocking DJ duo and even a little Celtic punk are among the top shows.

No time to chat, here’s the gigs, kids!

Thursday: If you really want to get your St. Pats on, get down to Katacombes to catch the Celtci punk (via Vancouver) of the Real McKenzies, with Morgan and Boids. 1635 St-Laurent, 8 p.m., $19/$22

The Real McKenzies is all well and good, but the big pick of the week starts tonight when we are graced by proto-punk pioneer Jonathan Richman of the Modern Lovers at Sala. If this sells out, check Friday’s listing. 4848 St-Laurent, 9 p.m., $25/$30

Friday: If you missed Jonathan Richman tonight, you can get another crack as he performs the second night of his two-night stint at Sala. 4848 St-Laurent, 9 p.m., $25/$30

A perfect place to be on your pre-gig or post-gig night would be at North Star when Montreal’s most rocking DJ duo loads their crates of vinyl up North Star’s stairs for another edition of Punk Police. 3908 St-Laurent, p.m., $

For a night of molten metal that runs the gamut from death to black, you can make it down to one of the best heart-driven venues in the city — Brasserie Beaubien — for Profane Order, Spectral Wound (!!!), new kids on the block Blood Sacrifice and Eyes of Night. 73 Beaubien E., 9 p.m., $5-$10 sliding scale/PWYC

In more heavy news, you can also make it down to Katacombes to catch Crosstitution, Inner Turmoil, Gland, Maou Mindu and Ashbreather. 1635 St-Laurent, 8:30 p.m., $10/$12

For people who want their krautrock mixed with post-punk and searing psych, you can catch local heroes Suuns, who launch their fourth jammer Felt at le National with the last gig by Security. 1220 Ste-Catherine E., 9 p.m., $18/$22

Saturday: Psych heads are gonna want to darken the door of Casa to catch modern psych jams of A Devil’s Din and Twenty-One Twenty. 4873 St-Laurent, 9 p.m., $10

If you are looking for a night that includes folk, oi and street punk, you can catch Boulimik Foodfight, Dirty Work, Union Thugs and Robert Fusil. 1635 St-Laurent, 9 p.m., $7

L’Esco should be filled to the brim on their Analogue Addiction night with a launch from power-pop punkers Priors with Lonely Parade and Faze. 4461 St-Denis, 9 p.m., $10

Sunday: L’Escogriffe’s regular weekly Pasta Party continues with the dinner bell being rung at 5 p.m. as Li’l Andy croons into your plate of spag. 4461 St-Denis, 5 p.m., $12 (includes meal, with veggie option)

Afterwards you can drag your belly full of carbs to le Ritz to shake it off to the indie rock ‘n’ roll of Titus Andronicus with Rick Maguire from Pile. Superchunk meets Mott the Hoople? 179 Jean-Talon W., 9 p.m., $15/$20

Monday: If you want to see where the germ of metal shred guitar comes from, you will want to get your dainty digits to Club Soda to catch the flying V shrapnel of Michael Schenker, who will perform an evening with all three of his original vocalists. Steve’s Music store is gonna be hungover on Tuesday! 1225 St-Laurent, 8 p.m., $61.50/$66.50

Wednesday: If you missed Frisky Kids‘ garage stomp at l’Esco a couple of weeks ago, you can get another chance to catch them at Casa with All Day Breakfast and Greg McEvoy. 4873 St-Laurent, 8 p.m., $10

For any metal head, the definite gig of the week would be at Foufs when Soulfly perform as their classic and decidedly more punk side persona Nailbomb, with heavy-duty openers Today Is the Day, Lody Kong and Uncured. Keep yer nose clean in the pit! 87 Ste-Catherine E., 7:30 p.m., $30/$35
