REVIEW: The Breeders’ All Nerve

The Boston-bred, Pixies-spin-off alt-rock band returns with their first album in a decade.

The Breeders, All Nerve (4AD)

With the same line-up that released the legendary Last Splash 25 years ago (including both Deal sisters), the Boston-bred, Pixies-spin-off alt-rock band returns with their first album in a decade — and it’s pretty sick. The gutsy guitar grind and weird space of their previous material is all there, sounding as raw and vigorous as ever, though the old pop underpinnings are minimal — don’t expect another “Divine Hammer,” though “Wait in the Car” comes close. Serious ’90s kids (and black-wardrobe types) will get a real kick out of “MetaGoth,” sung by deadpan British bassist Josephine Wiggs. The Breeders play with openers Melkbelly at Théâtre Corona Virgin Mobile on Saturday, May 5, 8 p.m., $38/$43
