Activist Vincent Mousseau leads the workshop Art and Activism: A User’s Guide, addressing “the ways in which art can be used as a vector to achieve positive social change.” Dawson College’s Conrod’s Lounge, 4001 de Maisonneuve W., 1st floor,) 2:15–3 p.m.

Catch a night of experimental music with live sets by Baccam/Chayer (Hazy Montagne Mystique and Yannick Chayer, with visuals by Guillaume Vallée), 1/4 tonne (Nick Kuepfer & Eric Craven), Sound of the Mountain (Craig Pederson and Elizabeth Millar), Alain Lefebvre and a DJ set by Me Float. It’s the first day of the brand-new Jack of All Trades (JOAT) urban arts festival, happening this weekend at a variety of venues with a slate of music, dance and arts events. Tonight’s line-up includes an vernissage at Artgang for an exhibition of photography, collage and vintage boomboxes, plus a special edition of le Cypher live hip hop and soul jam at le Bleury-Bar à Vinyle with Urban Science. Portland’s STRFKR promises a funky dancefloor experience at Théâtre Fairmount, with openers Gigamesh and Psychic Twin. 5240 Parc, 9 p.m., $20

Guelph-based post-metal/psych outfit Whoop-Szo (led by Ojibwe artist Adam Sturgeon) lands at l’Escogriffe to play tunes from their recent release Citizen’s Ban(ne)d Radio along with locals Mono No Aware and Shining Wizard. 4467 St-Denis, 9 p.m., $7

Montreal band Phern (featuring members of Moss Lime, Sheer Agony and Each Other) launches their new record Cool Coma — available on limited-run cassette with a download card and lyrics zine — with a show at la Plante. The openers are André-Charles Thériault, Oubliette and Jerkwater Image. Secret location, 9:30 p.m., $8/$20 including a copy of the Phern album package
