Drone/metal mayhem comes to Montreal this week

Woah, so you finally made it through A Varning and POP and figured you can remain couch-bound to catch up on some Netflix action – wrong! The shows keep piling up with the Red Bull Music Academy fest actually holding the two most righteous shows this week. Dig it.

Friday: Noise rockers Yardlets will let the treble ring at Brasserie Beaubien with Paul Jacobs and Black Bambi. 73 Beaubien E., 10 p.m., no price listed

Fans of Om and other Middle Eastern-inspired, epic, heavy jams should make it down to Turbo Haus to catch the heaviosity of Moncton duo Zaum with Mountain Dust and Chronolith. 5011 Notre-Dame W., 9 p..m, $9/$12

Dronesters are definitely going to want to make it down to Griffintown to catch the droney drones of Ames Sanglant, Voivod’s Away, Black Mecha, Drainolith, Echo Beach, Kara-Lis Coverdale, Melanie Mongeon and Topon Das, Neige et Noirceur, thisquietarmy, Tim Hecker (!!!)  and Venetian Snares. Has anybody else caught the irony of an energy drink presenting a drone show? 431 St-Martin, 8 p.m., $10

One of Montreal’s finest, Xarah Dion, releases her new jam Fugitive with Gold Zebra at le Ritz. 179 Jean-Talon W., 9 p.m., $10

Finally, if you weren’t nimble enough to grip tix for Mild High Club with Alex Calder and Anemone at Casa, you’re fugged without a kiss as this gig is sold out.

Saturday: A huge gig for those of us who were burrowed into the underground ’90s thang would be the return of the almighty Built to Spill with Hop Along and Alex G. at Club Soda. 1225 St-Laurent, 8 p.m., $25/$30

One of Montreal’s most brutal band (and certainly one of the loudest) Hashed Out release their new jam Cosmic Pessimism on l’Oeil du Tigre at l’Esco with Mhedved and Teen Seizure. Vinyl copies can be grabbed at Hashed Out’s merch table. 4467 St-Denis, doors at 9 p.m., $5

For a night of shoegazy goodness you can catch Mi’ens with Lae and Jon. 5765 St-Laurent, 8:30 p.m., price unlisted

Local hardcore heroes Hold a Grudge will reunite for a special night benefiting the Montreal chapter of the SPCA at Katacombes with New Yawk’s Out.Live.Death, Mental Fix and Offside. 1635 St-Laurent, 8:30 p.m., $10

My big pick of the week is presented by the Red Bull Music Academy and is in their drone series which parks itself at le Belmont (?) with Ex Eye, featuring Colin Stetson, Sunn O)))’s Stephen O’Malley and others. This will be epic and probably the greatest thing that has ever bounced around le Belmont’s walls. Opening is Deradoorian, Merk and Sofie Winterson. 4483 St-Laurent, 9 p.m., $15

Tuesday: This week’s edition of Deadly Mardis DIY Shows series at Rockette features Nuage Flou. 4479 St-Denis, 10 p.m., $5/PWYC

Wednesday: Montreal faves Merchandise return to town at la Vitrola with Public Memory and Mundy’s Bay. 4602 St-Laurent, 9 p.m., $13/$15
