The sickest Montreal shows off the festival circuit

Local launches and comeback gigs, subversive dance music, hardcore legends and more punk bands in vans.

facebookI’m back! Did you miss me? Now that I’m full of summertime bevies while nursing a terrasse sunburn, I’ll jump into the swing of things and hip you squares to the shows happening around town this week:

Friday: You can make it down to the best venue in Mile Ex — Brasserie Beaubien — to check out Traces, who launch a cassette tonight with Secret Secret Girl, Astral Gunk and DJ Jef Elise Barbara keeping things spinning. 73 Beaubien E., 9 p.m., $8/PWYC/$13 with tape

The third edition of Subversive: Future-Proof Music will get underway at Casa with Police des Moeurs, Void Republic and JOJI. Subversive music has never been so danceable. Casa del Popolo (4873 St-Laurent), 9 p.m., $5/PWYC

The fine folks at Analogue Addiction have cooked up a night at la Vitrola with the Sangomas, Quebec City’s Cobrateens and Disposer. 4602 St-Laurent, 9 p.m., $7

Turbo Haus has been a little quiet lately, but come out kicking with Prism Tats, Odd Limbs and High Hills. 5011 Notre-Dame W., 9 p.m., $10/$13

If you were planning on getting your metalcore fix on with Architects, Counter Parts, Sworn In and Make Them Suffer at le National tonight, better make other plans as this show (and entire tour) is cancelled.

Monday: Fans of punishing punk will not want to miss legends Terror when they obliterate Foufounes with the power violence of Power Trip, Harms Way and more hairy knuckle-draggers. 87 Ste-Catherine E., 6 p.m., $25/$30

Tuesday: The weekly Deadly Mardi DIY Show series at Rockette continues this week with Constellation Nightclub. 4479 St-Denis, 10 p.m., $5/PWYC

My big pick of the week is definitely Ashbringer with Vow of Thorns, but make sure you show up early to catch one of my favourite bands in the city — Spectral Wound! — who return after a lengthy hiatus. Casa del Popolo (4873 St-Laurent), 8 p.m., $5

Wednesday: If you want to go to a venue run by people truly passionate about music, head down to the Drones to catch NYC’s Palberta and locals Hand Cream — who are just putting the finishing touches on their new jammer — with BYHD and Ugly Cry taking up the support slot. Secret locaction, 10:30 p.m., $8/PWYC

Finally, at Casa you can check out Nobro with Nanimal and Weeping Witch. 4873 St-Laurent, 9:30 p.m., $11
