Nomadic Massive

It’s sidewalk sale weekend starting today along Mont-Royal avenue, Verdun’s Promenade Wellington, and Hochelaga’s Ontario E, with all three festivals promising shopping, music, arts, special activities and other fun stuff running through Sunday.

Digital music and arts festival Mutek is in full swing, and you can catch free DJ sets in the Quartier des Spectacles every night from tonight through Saturday, starting with a Bolting Bits collab tonight featuring Vertigo Inc, Riohv, Blue Hawaii and Fritz Wentink. Parterre de la Quartier des Spectacles, Clark & de Maisonneuve, 5–11 p.m., free

Bowie fans will  never have the opportunity to see the multi-talented songwriter and performer live again, but longtime touring Bowie impersonator David Brighton and his band are offering the next best thing: Space Oddity, a show spanning the late ’60s to early ’80s period of Bowie’s career, with all the transformative costume changes and style shifts you’d expect. See more details in our interview with Brighton here. Club Soda (1225 St-Laurent), 8 p.m., $46.50/$49.75

A solid line-up of local music talent has assembled to mount a benefit show for photographer Stacy Lee, who was recently the victim of a B&E robbery. Hua Li, Radiant Baby, NOIA, Johnny Ripper, Ether Gang and Bootyism will play Café Cleopatra to raise funds for Lee to replace her cameras and other photography gear. There’s also a crowdfunding campaign here. 1230 St-Laurent, 9 p.m.

After three solid years of international touring, Montreal’s  Nomadic Massive (#3 Best Hip Hop Act in Montreal according to the Best of MTL poll) returns home with a new album, The Big Band Theory, launching with a special show tonight at Groove Nation with DJ Dr.MaD. 410 Rachel E., 9 p.m., $10

As part of the Suoni per il Popolo festival, heavy Montreal band — #2 Heaviest Act according to the Best of MTL poll — USA Out of Vietnam (feat. Cult MTL columnist Johnson Cummins) plays Casa with a pair of local solo acts opening, namely Un Blonde and solo dude Old Boy. 4873 St-Laurent, 9:15 p.m., $8/$10
