The Knocks

Two bilingual visual art magazines launch new issues today including Montreal’s art and opinion magazine esse launching issue 86 on geopolitics with a 5 à 7 at Formats bookstore in the 2-22 building (2 Ste-Catherine E., #301, 5–7 p.m., free) and Ciel Variable with issue 102: So Far Away, So Close at Cinémathèque Québécoise (335 de Maisonneuve E., 5–8 p.m., free)

Two Montreal acts with a fresh take on folk music are launching records at la Vitrola tonight: klezmer artist Geoff Berner and cabaret-noir ensemble Orkestar Kriminal. 4602 St-Laurent, 8 p.m., $12/$15

Fantasia’s monthly off-season programming series Fantasia Presents moves from Excentris (RIP) to Cinéma du Parc for 2016. Its first offering of the new year is the newly discovered so-bad-it’s-good classic Dangerous Men, an action film that took 26 years (!) to make and grossed an impressive $70 before being rediscovered by the fine folks at Drafthouse Films. 3575 Parc, 9:15 p.m., $12.50

NYC electronic duo (and buzz band of the moment) the Knocks are playing le Belmont tonight, and you’ll want to get in early to see opener Sofi Tukker, as well as Cardiknox. 4483 St-Laurent, 9:30 p.m., $20

I Love Neon Productions presents DJ Paypal — the American Berlin-based producer known for his footwork beats, satirical advertising art and secret identity (his face is never photographed) — who’s playing a headlining set at Datcha, with local support from River Lance and Babi Audi. 98 Laurier W., 11 p.m., $7 before midnight/$10

Head to Peopl for the first edition of Texture, a new monthly club night thrown by a brand-new creative house and record label of the same name, featuring live painting by Heidi Cardyn and other visual and aural surprises. 390 Notre-Dame W., 11 p.m., free
