The best indie rock, punk, metal, noise and synth-wave gigs in Montreal this week.

facebookWhile you lovely readers are putting your final touches on your Halloween costumes, I’m missing out on the greatest holiday of the year in Montreal as I am on the last stretch of my time abroad. Not that I’m complaining — I’ve been having the time of my life and running into loads of Montreal ex-pats. I was lucky enough to catch Aidan Baker (Nadja) and his new krautrock vehicle before Montreal drone king thisquietarmy took the stage and destroyed a room doting Berliners. My homesick heart beat proud that night. Tomorrow I’m taking a train in Belgium to catch 514 giants godspeed you! black Emperor. Will report back next week!

Friday: Probably the best-named band in Montreal history — Smokes — will launch their new release at Casa with Daniel Isaiah and Year of Glad. How could a band with such a delightfully Canadian moniker not be fuggin’ amazing? 4873 St-Laurent, 9 p.m., $10

For a night of heaviosity, catch the Trick or Trash night at TRH Bar with Eternal Judgment, Genetic Error and the riff-tastic Cromagnum. 3699 St-Laurent, 8 p.m., $10/$12 without a costume

For a night of electronic fuckery and straight-up beats you can make it down to 820 Plaza for Sadaf, her best friend Babi Audi, Montreal’s shining jewel Marie Davidson, Woulg, White and Odile Myrtil. 6820 Marconi, 9 p.m., free

Another guaranteed barnstormer is Slut Island’s party at le Ritz, with a performance by Leonore Claire Herrem and DJ’s Compton Chic and Frankie Teardrop keeping things heated on the dancefloor. 179 Jean-Talon W., 10 p.m., $5/PWYC

Saturday: Sound Central continues to be the place to catch intimate shows while picking up an armful of wax when the boss man Shawn Central gets behind the traps for his instrumetal band Squalor with Mythoklash. 4486 St-Laurent, 6 p.m., free

Local promoters Analogue Addiction get in on the spooky-ooky fun at their favourite haunt, l’Esco, with the power pop perfection of Sonic Avenues and Alparchie. 4467 St-Denis, 9 p.m., $10

My big pick of the weekend, and easily the scariest show going this week, is of course Montreal ex-pat Corpusse, who will give you the heeby jeebies at Casa with the World Provider, Douce Angoisse and DJ’d Laszlo and Ryan Alexander Diduck. 4873 St-Laurent, 10 p.m., PWYC/$6 suggested

Sunday: For those who want to pummel their Halloween hangover into complete submission, head to the Vile Intent tape release party with the noise of Blankets and Nightwitches. This one starts early. 4602 St-Laurent, 7:30 p.m., $5/PWYC

Monday: My big pick of the week(days) is the return of doom legends Yob, who play Foufs with the heavy support of Black Cobra and Dopethrone. Doom metal can often be the most mediocre and often imitated genre ever but Yob’s Great Cessation was easily one of the genre’s most challenging listens ever. Do Not Miss. 87 Ste-Catherine E., 8 p.m., $20

Tuesday: Making it down to Casa for Last Ex is an easy decision but what is making this a mandatory show is Silver Mt. Zion’s Jessica Moss’s soloed and looped violin. Thank me later. 4873 St-Laurent, 9:30 p.m., $10/$13

Wednesday: Suoni per il Popolo regulars are surely going to mosey over to Casa for Charalambides spin-off Tom Carter with Anne F. Jaques with Tim Olive and Pando. 4873 St-Laurent, 9 p.m., $8/PWYC

Current Obsession: Slint, Spiderland
