Soul Clap & Dance Off

Time to fucking dance

There’s a major “maximum rock ‘n’ soul” dance party happening this weekend PLUS the top Montreal shows of the week.

facebookI’ve been in Europe sleeping on floors and meeting amazing people for the past month and am currently driving through the idyllic Slovenian countryside with Lisa Czech on my mind. You should check out Czech’s pop-up shop at Sound Central, which ends on Tuesday and if you want to check out the goods from one of Montreal’s best artists you need to make the trip to say hello to Shawn and co at the Central and dive into the cornucopia of treats in Czech’s pen and ink world.

Here’s the gigs I’m missing:

Thursday: You can help launch Pins & Needles‘ new power pop jammer Mystic Woman with Lunch Hour Husbands and the Lonely Parade at Cagibi. 5490 St-Laurent, 9 p.m., $10/$20 with the record

For something a little louder you can check out the post punk of Mexico City’s Zotz with Richmond, Virginia’s the Cretins, Loudhouse’s newest basement birth Croche and the Lisa Czech led Maloko at Brasserie Beaubien. Bring tip money! 73 Beaubien E., 9 p.m., $10

For sheer heaviosity you can catch Deathwish recording artists Cult Leader with help from their heavy friends Dark Circles, Kennedy and Basalte at Turbo Haus. 5011 Notre-Dame W., 8 p.m., $13

Friday: If you dig the hypnotic Middle Eastern groove of Om you are not going to want to miss Moncton duo Zaum who will put you under their spell at Turbo Haus with the Folk, Rust Eden and Pang Attack. 5011 Notre-Dame W., 9 p.m., $10

The Phenomena Festival continues at Casa and Casa associated venues but if you can only make one of the shows it should be the electronic fuckery of Institutional Prostitution with Johnny Couteau. 4873 St-Laurent, 9:30 p.m., $8

Saturday: For a night of seething black metal, you can catch the first performance in 12 years by Triskele, Brume D’Automne and Sovannak Ke at (you guessed it) Turbo Haus. 5011 Notre-Dame W., 9 p.m., $10

New York DJ Jonathan Toubin’s amazing night Soul Clap & Dance Off is indeed cancelled at Divan Orange but the fine furry folks at Matahari loft have saved the day and will be playing host for one of the best soul dance parties you will ever do the mashed potato to. Bloodshot Bill & the Hick-Ups will play live and $100 will be awarded to the grooviest dancer in the room. 1673 Mont-Royal E., 9 p.m., $10

Monday: Turbo Haus continues to blot out almost every day on the October calendar with gigs but this one is surely one of the big hits of the month. Kill Rock Stars’ recording artists Kinski will get the family jams on with the psyched out fuzzed up punkers UUBBUURRUU (featuring DJ Joey Napoleon) with Turbo Haus “haus” band Mountain Dust. 5011 Notre-Dame W., 9 p.m., $10/$12

Tuesday: My big pick of the week would go to the sublime guitar work of Steve Gunn at La Plante with James Elkington and Nathan Salsburg. Gunn’s exquisite Way Out West record remained one of my favorites of last year and deservedly ruled the year-end critics lists. Dig into Way Out West on your regular streaming music sources and make this gig! Secret location, 9 p.m., $10

Wednesday: Many are doing cartwheels for Eternal Husbands who are playing at le Ritz but the real reason you should be getting down their early is to check out local openers Caro Diaro (ex Maica Mia) and Birds of Paradise. 179 Jean-Talon W., 8 p.m., $10
