Beat the heat by hitting a movie theatre today. Amid the blockbuster action movies and mediocre comedies (and Straight Outta Compton, which also looks pretty cool) is Turbo Kid, a post-apocalyptic sci-fi film with a retro touch, made by Montrealers. Read more about the film here, and check it out here.

KickDrum hosts a chill songwriters’ circle performance night in the backyard at Santropol featuring Myles Hildebrand, Téo and Josh Spencer (the Arborists). 3990 St-Urbain, 6:30 p.m., PWYC

The Festival Mode & Design kicks off today with a bilingual conference at the MAC with Stephen Jones, a British milliner who’s created iconic hats for Marc Jacobs, Balenciaga, Vivienne Westwood and more. 185 Ste-Catherine W., 7 p.m., $35

Try on a new fitness routine on for size and learn about the art of burlesque at the Wiggle Room, where Arabesque Burlesque Education hosts an open house tonight with their instructors, Cult MTL cover girl Lady Josephine, Ruby Outevsky, Jessica Rae and BonBon Bombay. If you can’t get enough, classes begin Sept. 8. 3874 St-Laurent, 7–9 p.m., free

Tap in to some fresh permutations of folk and R&B at Casa del Popolo, where Bernice, Un Blonde and Devon Sproule. 4873 St-Laurent, 8 p.m., $10
