Art this week

A very Montreal week in the arts scene with work reflecting different views of the city, plus live painting and the opening of a replica of the Sistine Chapel ceiling.

Even though summer’s a quiet time for galleries, there’s still a great selection of shows to check out this week.

For another look at Montreal, head to Galerie Espace on Thursday for paintings by Marilyse Julien that show Montreal landmarks in a new light. 4844 St-Laurent, Thursday, July 9, 5–8 p.m.

On Friday, don’t miss the vernissage for If Nothing Changes, a show by California graffiti and lettering artist TRAV MSK at ArtGang Gallery in the St-Hubert Plaza. It happens to be sidewalk sale week on the Plaza, so make a day of it and check out some of the free performances and other programming in the neighbourhood. The vernissage will double as the after party for Alacair Ensemble’s free set at 8:30 p.m. at St-Hubert & Bélanger. 6524 St-Hubert, Friday, July 10, 5–10 p.m.

Over a dozen artists will be on hand creating new works in teams of two, including Alex Produkt, Cédric Taillon, Sophie Wilkins, Marc-Frédéric Tufelli and more. 250 Ste-Catherine E., Friday, July 10, 7–11 p.m.

Also on Friday, Palais des congrès unveils their new installation, a replica of Michaelangelo’s Sistine Chapel ceiling, which will be on display until Oct. 12. 159 St-Antoine W., open during Palais des congrès business hours.
