Osheaga retrospectives, psychedelic guitar art, photos honouring historic Russian queers and more are on display in Montreal’s art scene this week.

As Montreal’s great yearly apartment switcheroo is underway this week, take a break from moving (or helping your friends move) by checking out some art shows.

Beginning today, Wednedsay, and running through Sunday is the outdoor arts festival MTL en Arts, setting up shop along the pedestrian stretch of Ste-Catherine Street through the Village from St-Hubert to Papineau. Check out over 160 exhibitors and performers with an art fair, rotating exhibitions, performances, live painting and more activities throughout the week. Check mtlenarts.com for details.

For a special Canada Day exhibition, head to Galerie Mile End (Ame-Art) for a Wednesday 5à7 vernissage for Canada’s Self Portrait, a project from artist Aquil Virani and educator Rebecca Jones that features submissions from 800 Canadians about what it means to be Canadian. 5345 du Parc, Wednesday, July 1, 5–7 p.m., free

Thursday has a strong lineup of shows beginning, including the annual Osheaga show of gig posters, Music on Paper opening at Yves Laroche Galerie d’Art. This year, the show will be joined by a special exhibit of photography celebrating 10 years of killer Osheaga performances by photographer extraordinaire Susan Moss. For another music-themed exhibition, head to O Patro Vys Thursday to see the psychedelic hyper-doodling of John Lanthier. The vernissage will include musical performances by H U E I, Ignition Riot, Creepin Daisy and the Fuzzy Undertones, some of whom will play on hyperdoodled guitars created by Lanthier and Dwight Berg. 356 Mont-Royal E., Thursday, July 2, 6 p.m.

In the Concordia neighbourhood, stop by Kafein Thursday for a series of polaroids and prints by Steben Alexander, whose work is a modern take on the glamour queens of the golden age such as the Marchesa Luia Casati and Kiki de Montparnasse. 1420A Bishop, Thursday, July 2, 8–11 p.m.

 

On Friday, check out a neighbourhood vernissage in Hochelaga at the second edition of Alt Art & Design’s group show Quartier en Art. 3963 Ste-Catherine E., Friday, July 3, 5–9 p.m.

 

On Saturday, head to La Galerie (formerly Galerie D) in the Village for the vernissage of To Russia With Love, a project by Damiàn Siqueiros to call attention to the diminishing rights of LGBTQ people in Russia. The exhibit features photographs that portray influential queers from Russian history, with a silent auction whose proceeds will be dedicated to helping queer Russian youth. 1200 Amherst, #102, Saturday, July 4, 5–10 p.m.

 

Also Saturday, it’s time for another vernissage at Galerie ABYSS, this one with the theme Comix. The group show features works by Peter Farmer, Benny Wilding, Sandra Chevrier, Turtlecaps, Edith Lebeau and more. 1520 Notre-Dame W., Saturday, July 4, 7–10 p.m.
