Art this week

Jon Rafman discusses his new exhibit with an artist talk at the MAC, plus a jazzy photo show and more this week in the arts scene.

RAFMAN MainSqueeze-2014-11-1024x576

Still from ‘Main Squeeze’ by Jon Rafman at the MAC

Summer is a bit of a sleepy time for the art world, but there’s still a number of notable events going on in the scene this week.

The big event of the week happens tonight, Thursday, at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal (MAC) where you’re invited to join Jon Rafman for a conversation about his practice in the context of his recently-opened solo show, with the show’s curator Mark Lanctôt. The show is a must-see, containing new and recent photographic and video-based works by Rafman that deal with life in the digital age and the impact of the internet on our psyches and relationships. Rafman’s approach to studying the net and its effects points out that online life is no longer a new thing, but a now-entrenched daily reality—therefore instead of presenting the web as a shiny new egg full of potential to solve all the world’s problems, his works look at the dark side of the web, extracting artifacts from past and present that reveal the internet’s power to isolate as well as to connect, and speculates on a future where our darkest impulses are afforded the tools to take root and propagate.

Speaking about his work at a press conference opening the exhibit last Thursday, Rafman emphasized that it’s human thought and action he’s exploring, rather than the technology used to express it. He said, “I don’t believe that technology is what’s driving change in the world as if it were some agent—it’s not at all. That’s putting all of our power outside of ourselves. I think the way we look at the world, our consciousness, is reflected in what technology becomes popular, what communities form on the internet, what succeeds on a mass level reflects something about the change that’s already occurred in human consciousness.” Artist talk with Jon Rafman, Thursday, June 25, MAC, 185 Ste-Catherine W., 7 p.m., free. Livestreaming on the MAC website here.

In the Plateau tonight, Thursday, check out the vernissage at Galerie Espace for Never Less Than Marvelous, from husband-and-wife artists Oily Chi and Coco Khan (who you may know as her music alter-ego, Cocobeurre). Each will bring their own aesthetic to the idea of the marvelous, with futuristic, space-age, and otherwise imaginative works on display. 4844 St-Laurent, Thursday, June 25, 5 p.m.

On Saturday, head to Hochelaga for Neuf is Enough, a group show of nine Montreal street artists at art supply shop Le Sino. Participating artists include Mural Fest alums Astro and Monk.E plus Stare, Jaber, skate ambassador Spoon-B and more. 2817 Ontario E., Saturday, June 27, 8 p.m.

The Golden Age of Jazz presents work by longtime New York photographer Hank O’Neal (who also acts as the director of the Jazz Foundation of America) has been documenting jazz in America for 50 years. A parallel group exhibit, Melomania, will display works by Montreal-based photographers including Raymonde April, Susan Moss and Gabor Szilasi that span from the 1970’s to today. 372 Ste-Catherine W., #516, Saturday, June 27, 4–6 p.m.
