Art this week

Vernissages, conferences and art parties coming at you all weekend long in Montreal’s arts scene.

DHC Homeless Child 3 detail Shonibare

Work by Yinka Shonibare MBE at DHC/ART

It’s another jam-packed week in Montreal arts with a couple of dozen new shows opening, more end-of-semester opportunities to see work by graduating students and a number of artist talks, performances and special events.

A big new show has just opened at DHC/ART—Pièces de résistance is the first Canadian solo exhibition for British-Nigerian artist Yinka Shonibare MBE. The vernissage already took place Tuesday night (a little early for this column), but you’ll have until September to explore the works—including sculptures, films, photographs and screen-prints that incorporate Shonibare’s signature use of Dutch-wax printed textiles to consider questions of identity and culture, authenticity and appropriation, and intersections of race, class and gender. There’s a lot to unpack here, but luckily there will be several opportunities throughout the run to take advantage of a guided tour by curator Cheryl Sim, with the first one coming up on May 16. 451 & 465 St-Jean, exhibit ongoing with guided tour Saturday, May 16, 4 p.m.

Work by Olivia McGilchrist at Concordia's '404 Error Not Found' show
Work by Olivia McGilchrist at Concordia’s ‘Error 404 Not Found’ show

There’s lots to see tonight, Thursday, with 10 different vernissages to choose from plus a few other treats. At Concordia’s FOFA Gallery, take in a curator-guided tour of a show that we mentioned here last week: The Rebel Yells: Dress and Political Re-Dress in Contemporary Indigenous Art featuring works by several artists influenced by Shelley Niro. Afterwards, head up to the sixth and seventh floors to see work by graduating students from the Design and Computation Arts program in two shows, Forward Slash (undergrads) and 404 Error Not Found (graduates). Expect to see a wide variety of new media works including graphics, 3D video games, interactive installations and even a virtual reality capsule viewed through an oculus rift. 1515 Ste-Catherine W., guided tour of The Rebel Yells at 5 p.m., vernissages from 6–11 p.m. in rooms EV-6.735 / 6.745 and EV-7.735 / 7.745

Work by at Station 16
Work by Peter Andrew Lusztyk and Derek Blais at Station 16

Also Thursday, check out a new photography exhibit called Point Blank at Station 16 featuring work by Toronto artists Peter Andrew Lusztyk and Derek Blais that will have you staring down the barrel of a gun. Billed as ‘portraits’ and shot to present the subjects as powerful but flawed individuals, the large-scale black and white images are not intended to be political statements, so you’ll have to insert your own social commentary. 3523 St-Laurent, Thursday, April 30, 7 p.m.

In Mile End Thursday, Atelier Circulaire opens a show of engravings by Louis-Pierre Bougie that draw parallels between the human and animal worlds. 5445 de Gaspé #105, Thursday, April 30, 5:30 p.m.

Work by Henricks at Dazibao
Work by Nelson Henricks at Dazibao

Just up the street at Dazibao, Nelson Henricks presents A Lecture on Arton Thursday, a four-part exhibition that creates visuals from the symbols we use to transmit ideas to each other — namely the alphabet. The namesake work draws from a lecture given by Oscar Wilde to create a four-screen video installation that focuses on the sensory experience of the way the words sound more than their meaning. 5455 de Gaspé #109, Thursday, April 30, 7 p.m.

Friday is May Day, International Day of the Worker, and a thematic exhibition will launch at Monastiraki with Spare Some Social Change (Nothing Has Changed) by Mathieu Beauséjour, a multimedia artist with a long history of creating art that reflects current and historical power struggles by using cultural symbols borrowed from money, the monarchy, protest anthems and more. Works by Carl Campeau will also be on display throughout the month. 5478 St-Laurent, Friday, May 1, 6–9 p.m.

Work by Benoit Aquin from his 'Mégantic' photo series
Work by Benoit Aquin from his ‘Mégantic’ photo series

Also Friday, stop by Apollo Studios for a collaboration with Galerie Hugues Charbonneau to present a group show featuring works by Jean-Benoit Pouliot, David Lafrance, Trevor Gould, Benoit Aquin and Alain Paiement. 136A St-Paul E., Friday, May 1, 6:30 p.m.

At the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal (MAC) on Saturday, artist-run centre Articule hosts the third edition of Montréal Monochrome, a conference intended to address the lack of representation of Indigenous artists and artists of colour across Montreal’s exhibition spaces. This year’s edition is presented with the theme of Un-Doing the Authentic with a program including performances, workshops, presentations and panel discussion with Montreal luminaries such as Nomadic Massive’s Nantali Indongo, the Narcicyst and Winnie SuperHova. Participation is free, but space is limited, so you’re encouraged to register ahead of time with Articule. MAC, Beverly Webster Rolph Hall, 185 Ste-Catherine W., Saturday, May 2, 10 a.m.–5 p.m.

Work by Séripop at Galerie Hugues Charbonneau
Work by Séripop at Galerie Hugues Charbonneau

Plenty of shows are happening on Saturday as well, including a highlight in Galerie Hugues Charbonneau’s Belgo space featuring 2015 Sobey art prize longlisted duo Séripop (Chloe Lum and Yannick Desranleau), who you may remember from their punk rock days as musicians with AIDS Wolf. The show, The Face Stayed East and the Mouth Went West (elements) uses light-boxes, photography and performance to present and interact with the duo’s sculptural installations that evoke the urban environment. 372 Ste-Catherine W. (Belgo Bldg #308), Saturday, May 2, 3–5 p.m.

An exhibition of portraiture called Kaleidoscope is opening Saturday at Maison de la culture du Plateau-Mont-Royal featuring works by Kiran Ambwani and Florence So, in conjunction with the beginning of the Accès Asie Festival. Depicted in the portraits are artists who have presented work at the festival over the past 20 years. 465 Mont Royal E., Saturday, May 2, 2–4 p.m.

Keep heading North Saturday and stop in at Art Mûr, where five new shows are opening, including Foundations by L.A. artist Lori Cozen Geller whose simply shaped sculptures tell a story when juxtaposed alongside slivers and donut holes sliced away from their forms. 5826 St-Hubert, Saturday, May 2, 3–5 p.m.

Work by Michael Reeder at Galerie C.O.A
Work by Michael Reeder at Galerie C.O.A

Still later Saturday in Little Italy’s Galerie C.O.A, check out the group show Visions with paintings and sculptures by artists like Michael Reeder, Adrian Landon Brooks and Eric Godin. 6405 St-Laurent, Saturday, May 2, 5–8 p.m.

Finally, get your dance on Saturday night at a fundraiser party for La Centrale Galerie Powerhouse at Cabaret Playhouse hosted by Kama la Mackerel and featuring a line-up of DJs and prizes to give away. 4296 St-Laurent, Saturday, May 2, 10 p.m., $10 at the door.
