4 ways to thug out this week

The loudest parties and rap shows on a quiet, pre-SXSW local landscape + important MTL festival news.

shineWell, friends, this ain’t Austin, TX, where more or less every cool band on the planet is headed in about a week and a half, so if it’s quiet ’round these here parts, don’t shoot the messenger.

We’ve got a bit of a mixed bag of offerings for the week ahead, and I’ll take the chance now to plug Hip Hop Week Montreal, which will be taking place at and around McGill from March 15 to 21. More on that next week, but be advised that both Jean Grae and the God MC Rakim are scheduled to perform that weekend, so get to the box office.

Here’s what’s good meanwhile.

Friday: One of France’s most prolific rappers and performers, La Fouine plays an all-ages show at le Petit Olympia. 1282 Amherst, 7 p.m., $35.50

Saturday:  G-G-G G-Unit newcomer Kidd Kidd  and “friends” blast le Belmont. If you came of age with G, you may be just old enough to attend. 4483 St-Laurent, 10 p.m., $20

Monday:  Rymz competes for your vote in the Francouvertes countdown series at Lion d’Or. Also featuring are Samuele and Deslandes, though I can’t speak to what they do. Rymz deserves the support though, so go thug that spot out if you’re down. 1676 Ontario E., 8 p.m., $10

Wednesday: S-S-S-Socalled launches a cook book, Life of Slice — that’s a second one, by the way — at Drawn & Quarterly, with a knish workshop, cake, and a live interview. So go thug that up a lil’, too. 211 Bernard W., 7 p.m., free
