Work by Miss Me. New works at Fresh Paint Gallery.
Guys, Nuit Blanche is nearly here. Galleries across town have been prepping their special Nuit Blanche programming for months already, so most of the week’s activities are centred around Saturday night’s festivities. Before we get to that though, there are a few events happening Thursday and Friday that are worth your attention.

If you’re curious about the temporary gallery we told you about earlier this week, it’s now open to the public it will open next week. Go check out work by Emmanuel Laflamme in the repurposed hardware store turned architect’s creative space before the whole thing is razed to make way for condos.***UPDATE*** The gallery will open to the public officially next Wednesday, March 4. Check the link above for opening hours and location.
Thursday, the English Language Arts Network (ELAN) is offering you the chance to meet with gallerists and curators from NYC and Boston with a special 5 à 7 at Parisian Laundry. Also present will be the team behind the upcoming Art Souterrain festival. While you’re there, take a look at the exhibit Collision 11, showing work from graduating MFA students at Concordia and UQAM. 3550 St-Antoine W., Thursday, Feb. 26, free. RSVP to admin@quebec-elan.org

A major highlight of the week is going down Thursday at the Darling Foundry with the video installation Unground by Luxembourg artists Gast Bouschet and Nadine Hilbert, curated by Kevin Muhlen. This multi-dimensional work will take you to the edge of humanity’s increasing alienation from nature in the face of the modern metropolis and relentless capitalist consumerism, with a glimmer of hope when anger can be purposefully channelled into creativity. 745 Ottawa, Thursday, Feb. 26, 5–10 p.m.
Also on Thursday, a screening and artist talk will be held at CK2 Gallery with Matt Goerzen discussing life in the digital realm, and Loreta Lamargese talking about how we relate to one another, with and without mediation through art, film or other forms of expression. BFFA3AE‘s short film “Live [EXPLICIT]” will be screened between the talks. 6560 Esplanade, #203, Thursday, Feb. 26, 6:30 p.m., RSVP to info@ck2gallery.com

I don’t know of any new shows opening on Friday (seems most of the galleries have scheduled openings this week to coincide with Nuit Blanche), but there IS a cocktail party on Friday at Galerie D to celebrate Steben Alexander’s Ma muse m’amuse, inspired by the legendary Belle Epoque art muse Marchesa Luisa Casati, which opened earlier this month. Don’t miss the chance to see this great show in a party atmosphere worthy of the Marchesa herself. 1200 Amherst, #102, Friday, Feb. 27, 5–10 p.m.
Also on Friday, Studio XX launches their urban wilderness mapping project, Wild City Mapping, which will be an open-source website with Montreal’s wild green spaces mapped along with records of community members’ connections to the spaces. The Sierra Club’s Floris Ensink will be on hand to give a presentation. 4001 Berri, #201, Friday, Feb. 27, 7 p.m., $5 suggested or free for members.

In conjunction with Art Souterrain, which opens during Nuit Blanche, Joyce Yahouda Gallery will host a panel discussion on Friday relating to the festival’s theme of security and personal freedom. The panel includes Israeli artists Maya Landman, Merav Svirsky and Inbal Hofman who will discuss their works to be presented during the festival. 372 Ste-Catherine W.,#516, Friday, Feb. 27, 4–6 p.m.

Alright, now obviously Nuit Blanche means there’s tons of stuff going on all over town Saturday night, and among those events is a biggie that your BFFs over here at Cult MTL have been collaborating on with the Phi Centre. La Nuit Tribe is set to be a huge party with a major musical line-up headlined by A Tribe Called Red. Throughout the night, artists Swarm and Red Bandit will be live-creating, and you’ll also have a chance to check out some of their previous work as well as some special video projections by Bear Witness, on exhibit for one night only.
For a comprehensive list of other recommended Nuit Blanche activities of all kinds, check out our curated round-up of highlights. As usual there’s an overwhelming array of options, but you can’t go wrong with going door to door at the Belgo building (372 Ste-Catherine W.). Highlights there include SBC Gallery’s launch of their Talk Show project, with special guests all night, and Atelier Circulaire’s Vinyl Scratching Workshop.
Bonus, just down the street from the Belgo, you can check out Fresh Paint’s new satellite space on Nuit Blanche with their first official exhibit, Saints of Soul : Beauty Through Hardship by prolific street artist Miss Me. Her beautifully illustrated wheat pastes of musical icons like Miles Davis, Billie Holiday, Tupac, Nina Simone and Amy Winehouse can be found on walls all around the world as well as in her home base of Montreal, but word is that she’s pulled out all the stops to create a unique indoor exhibit with some special touches that can’t be done outside on the fly. This special Nuit Blanche vernissage will include a street dance performance from Urban Identity Crew and DJ sets from Stram and Adass. 256 Ste-Catherine E., Saturday, Feb. 28, 8 p.m.
Don’t forget to check out the full listings below, put on an extra pair of socks and get out and see some art!
