Art this week

Black History heritage, extraction ecologies, street artists, found object sculptures, fiery household dystopias and dazzling Montreal photography are all in store for you and more in this week’s arts scene.

Are we all on the same page about this winter? Yes? Good. Although we might be stuck in this deep freeze for a while longer, there’s no better escape to a different reality than through art, and this week there’s plenty to choose from.

From ‘City of Hockey’ at City Hall

Take your pick of several openings on Wednesday, including an appropriately icy tribute to Montreal’s love-love relationship with hockey at Montreal City Hall’s Hall of Honour. The exhibit, Montreal, City of Hockey: From Laneway to Legend, is timed to coincide with the 140th anniversary of the first recorded organized indoor hockey match, in Montreal circa 1875. The public is invited to see the exhibit during City Hall opening hours beginning Feb. 18. 275 Notre-Dame E., M–F, 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m. and Saturday 12–4 p.m.

'Infinite Silver Columns' by Lisa Cochrane at Galerie Espace
‘Infinite Silver Columns’ by Lisa Cochrane at Galerie Espace

If these past few weeks of cold have left you huddled up indoors creating sculptures out of cat food cans, well sorry, but sculptor Lisa Cochrane does it better than you. Check out her large scale sculptures using repurposed found items at Wednesday’s vernissage, at Galerie Espace. Cochrane’s minimalist sculptures capture the forgotten grace of commonplace items while reflecting on the volume of waste produced by our throwaway lifestyles. 4844 St-Laurent, Wednesday, Feb. 18, 5–8 p.m.

Also on Wednesday, don’t miss the vernissage for Les Héritiers at Espace Mushagalusa, with work by Séadé, Ma’Liciouz and The Kevin Calixte. For this exhibit, part of Montreal’s celebration of Black History Month, the three artists, all Montrealers with Haïtian origins, have created works relating to their interpretation of the word “heritage. 533 Ontario E., Wednesday, Feb. 18, 6 p.m.

Thursday offers another exciting group of openings, and street-art lovers, this one’s for you: For its third year, MTL ZOO has rounded up a couple dozen of Montreal’s most creative citizens for a huge group show inside the Galerie l’Agora of the Cégep du Vieux Montréal. Come and check out works by Jeremy Shantz, MC Baldassari, Bryan Beyung, Miss Teri, Earth Crusher, Jason Botkin, Bonar and many more. 255 Ontario E., Wednesday, Feb. 19, 5–9:30 p.m.

DAZIBAO Reynold
Still from ‘Burn’ by Reynold Reynolds & Patrick Jolley at Dazibao

Another highlight exhibit will open Thursday at Dazibao with a Canadian first: five collected video installations by NYC and Berlin-based artist Reynold Reynolds, including three collaborative works with the late photographer Patrick Jolley, each with bleak themes of impending disaster and disconnectedness made all the more frightening by their settings inside the home, where we expect to feel the safest. Opening at the same time is a retrospective of 25 years of works by Chantal Du Pont. 5455 de Gaspé #109, Thursday, Feb. 19, 7 p.m.

Also of note Thursday is an artist talk by Ursula Biemann at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, including a screening of her work Black Sea Files as well as Judy Price’s White Oil. This event is part of the exhibit World of Matter: Exposing Resource Ecologies by the Leonard & Bina Ellen Art Gallery in collaboration with DHC/ART. 1379 Sherbrooke W., 5:30 p.m., free

The above-mentioned group exhibit World of Matter: Exposing Resource Ecologies will open officially with a vernissage Friday at the Leonard & Bina Ellen Art Gallery. The seven works in the exhibition address issues related to resource extraction with a focus on the shifting debate around the topic from a market-based perspective to one that includes implications for both human and non-human entities. The work, which straddles the line between the presentation of art vs. information, includes a weekend symposium designed to develop new strategies for artists, activists and other parties to create meaningful dialogue about extractive ecology. Full information here. 1400 de Maisonneuve W., Friday, Feb. 20, 6–8 p.m.

Friday also sees a couple of openings in the Belgo with Mathieu Grenier at Arprim (#426), where the artist transforms paper from medium to object, highlighting the similarities between the potential and torment of the blank page to the blank gallery wall. Downstairs at Centre des Arts actuels Skol (#314), Maude Bernier-Chabot presents Feast, a set of sculptures straddling the line between organic and artificial, looking at where those interactions take place (such as body modification). 372 Ste-Catherine W., Friday, Feb. 20, 5:30 p.m.

On Saturday, Artexte hosts an afternoon drawing workshop for all ages with Derek Sullivan using back issues of Artforum as inspiration. 2 Ste-Catherine E., #201, Saturday, Feb. 21, 1–4 p.m., free

walshAlso Saturday, a Montreal-centric photo exhibit with works by Steve Walsh will be on display in NDG at Boulangerie Chez Fred. Walsh’s gorgeous images of the city will remind you why you still live here, even through the cold, dark winters! 5338 Sherbrooke W., Saturday, Feb. 21, 4–8 p.m.

These highlights are just a small sample of shows on display this week, so don’t forget to check the full listings below! Now put on an extra pair of socks and go see some art!
