The Montreal arts scene offers another week of great shows and special events to dig into. Here are a few highlights we’re keeping our eyes on.

Today, Wednesday, artists Jacinthe Loranger and Stéphanie de Couto present their work shrinescapes with a vernissage at the Concordia University MFA Gallery 1395 René-Lévesque W., VA-102, Wednesday, Jan. 28, 5–8 p.m.

Or, stick to the east side and head to Maison de la culture Frontenac to see a retrospective of Jean-Paul Riopelle’s animal themed works, an exhibit that spent the month of December at the Boisé library in Ville St-Laurent. 2550 Ontario E., Wednesday, Jan. 28, 5 p.m.

Thursday is a big day, with five vernissages taking place. At Griffintown’s Arsenal Montreal, David Spriggs presents PRISM, a set of works examining our climate of heightened surveillance, on a monumental scale that could only fit in a former shipbuilding facility. 2020 William, Thursday, Jan. 29, 6 p.m.

'Staying In' by Edith Lebeau at Galerie ABYSS

Afterwards, take a quick skip over to Galerie ABYSS for the vernissage for Last Year’s Fears curated by Jono Doiron, in which the artists use the canvas to face their biggest nightmares. Works by MC Baldassari, Rupert Bottenberg, Kevin Ledo, Earth Crusher and more will be on display. 1520 Notre-Dame W., Thursday, Jan. 29, 7–10 p.m.

Further uptown at Occurrence, three shows are opening Thursday, including Vert voisin III  in which artist Stéphanie Beaulieu considers, through installation and photography, the effect on our psyches when we constantly compare ourselves and our achievements to that of our friends, neighbours and total strangers over the internet. 5455 de Gaspé, #108, Thursday, Jan. 29, 5:30 p.m.

From Robotis Personae at Eastern Bloc

Also on Thursday, three different artist talks are going down, including the artists behind Robotis Personae at Eastern Bloc (7240 Clark, 2nd Floor, Thursday, Jan. 29, 6 p.m.), Raymonde April at the Concordia Fine Arts Department (1395 René-Lévesque W., #VA-114, 6 p.m.) and Desearch Repartment at Articule (262 Fairmount W., Thursday, Jan. 29, 7 p.m.). Check out our review of Desearch Repartment’s exhibit here.

Saturday will be another full day, with six new shows opening. A highlight will be the two shows opening at Galerie Youn, including Mammalia, a set of paintings of animals that resemble selfies by NYC artist Michael Caines (who will be onsite for the vernissage) and LUX by Megan Ellen MacDonald, whose portraits of those kitschy porcelain animal figurines on your grandma’s windowsill elevates them to the positions of honour they’ve always deserved. 5226 St-Laurent, Saturday, Jan. 31, 2–5 p.m.

Work by Jeremy Price at Galerie Espace

Just down the road, check out new paintings by Jeremy Price at his Galerie Espace show called Roads and Trails. Price’s works depicting Montreal street scenes are complemented in this show with a trip into the countryside. 4844 St-Laurent, Saturday, Jan. 31, 2–5 p.m.

Over at the Belgo, check out the geometric and abstract works of George E. Russell, Demetrios Papakostas and Marc Ledoux at Galerie LUZ (#418, 2–5 p.m.) and holograms, videos and sculptures by Marc Dulude, zipertatou and Inbal Hoffman at Joyce Yahouda Gallery (#516, 4–6 p.m.) (372 Ste-Catherine W., Saturday, Jan. 31, 2–6 p.m.)

In a piece of rather big news, the MAC (Musée d’art contemporain) has announced an appearance by French art star Sophie Calle to coincide with an exhibition of her works opening soon. The artist will speak on Feb. 3 at 6 p.m. Her presentation will be en français, so try to get in a little extra practice beforehand. Tickets are free, but must be picked up in person at the MAC. Check the event page for details.
