Art this week

Warm up this week with a new slate of art shows as Montreal’s gallery scene comes back from vacay

LILIAN Blanche Louis-Michaud

Work by Blanche Louis-Michaud at Galerie Lilian Rodriguez

Well kids, vacation’s over – back to work, back to class, back to reality. Luckily for us though, this also means Montreal’s galleries and art centres are back in action, too. If you’re looking for something to do on one of these icy cold nights, check out a few of these season openers.

'Self Portrait / Nursing' by Catherine Opie
‘Self Portrait / Nursing’ by Catherine Opie at Galerie de l’UQAM

Thursday sees two openings at Galerie de l’UQAM. The group show The Disorderliness of Things explores themes of disobedience and counter-cultural rebellion as critical practice while stopping short of outright militancy. The second show, Transcender l’architecture by Marie-Eve Martel, considers Henry David Thoreau’s hand-built cottage at Walden Pond as a “place of knowledge,” juxtaposed with a prestigious Yale library of rare books. 1400 Berri, Pavillon Judith-Jasmin, Local J-R 120, Thursday, Jan. 8, 5:30 p.m.

Also on Thursday you can check out Usine 106U’s group show Fausse-térité, featuring over 30 artists and a multitude of disciplines on display, including paintings, textile works and sculptures. Don’t forget to pick up your free copy of 106UMagazine #4 while you’re there! 106 Roy E., Thursday, Jan. 8, 5–11 p.m.

Thursday also gives you a chance to contextualize Valérie Belin’s Surface Tension and Richard Mosse’s The Enclave exhibits at DHC/ART by checking out a special Kino Club film screening of Jennifer Baichwal’s 2006 documentary Manufactured Landscapes, presented following a discussion led by special guest Michelle Bélanger. 451 St-Jean, Thursday, Jan. 8, 6 p.m., free.

'Untitled' by Lena Athanasopoulou
‘Untitled’ by Lena Athanasopoulou at SKOL

On Saturday, head over to the Belgo Building for two afternoon vernissages. Centre des Arts actuels Skol (#314) will be showing The Engine Room, curated by Stéphanie Bertrand, a show that brings together videos, collages and photographs from three Greek artists for an exhibit dealing with the mental gymnastics we do to reconcile contradictory feelings about our lives and circumstances. Then head upstairs to Galerie Lilian Rodriguez (#405) to check out Espaces illusoires, a group show of three young Québécois artists, Blanche Louis-Michaud, Sarah Osborne and Amélie Riendeau. 372 Ste-Catherine W., Saturday, Jan. 10, 2–5 p.m.

'119m Above Sea Level' at SBC Gallery
‘119m Above Sea Level’ at SBC Gallery

While you’re in the Belgo on Saturday, don’t miss the chance to take a guided tour of SBC Gallery of Contemporary Art’s 119 m Above Sea Level in suite #507. The show is an attempt to recreate, using various methods of psychic time travel (alongside some more conventional, less metaphysical practices), the lost archives of a 1971 conceptual art piece involving Lawrence Weiner. 372 Ste-Catherine W., Saturday, Jan. 10, 2–5 p.m.

'Stir It Up' by Walt Pascoe at E. K. Voland Art Gallery
‘Stir It Up’ by Walt Pascoe at E. K. Voland Art Gallery

If we’re still in a deep-freeze by Sunday (and chances are we will be!), come in out of the cold by visiting E. K. Voland Art Gallery for curator Holly Friesen’s Warmth exhibit, featuring toasty works by over 40 artists, with a mobile espresso unit onsite from Les Cafetiers. 4710 St-Ambroise, #100, Sunday, Jan. 11, 2–4 p.m.

Some good news for those who didn’t get the chance to see the Biennale de Montréal during its run, the exhibits at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal (MAC) have been extended until Feb. 8.

The shows above are just a few highlights, so don’t forget to check out the full listings of openings, closings and ongoing shows below. Welcome back, keep cool and stay warm until next week!
