New Year’s Eve Party Guide 2014

Whatever you do this NYE, don’t stay in. Even if you’re the kind of person who’s out partying and gigging every night — and want to make a point of shunning New Year’s because it’s an overrated, overwrought celebration (which it can be, no denying that) — there’s nothing more depressing than being home alone with the TV while everyone else is out having fun, or at least trying to.

If you’re still looking for the right way to kick 2014 to the curb, maybe one of these 23 events will suit you:

 

Apt. 200

Saintwoods’ NYE bash features a line-up of DJs that’ll be familiar to anyone who frequents their club: Dave Luxe, Jay London, WYLN and Myfrienderic. Admission includes open bar from 8-10 p.m. and hors d’oeuvres.

This St-Henri bar is doing it down-home and casual, with DJ Napolitaine spinning pop oldies and Québécois yé-yé classics, free bubbly at midnight and a warm and cozy ambiance.

Every Mile End hipster and Mile Ex scenester under the winter sun is DJing at the Marilis Cardinal/Blue Skies Turn Black party at le Ritz (fka Il Motore), also featuring live music by She-Devils and Planet Hollywood, a karaoke session and plenty of shrimp.

Black Lights NYE proposes a rock ’n’ roll New Year’s bash featuring live music by the Brains and the Blue Demons, plus DJ Mathieu Beauséjour & Chris Danger, Karen Juanita and Vanilla Bliss.

Carnavalesque Freak Show

Bacchanalia specialists Cirque de Boudoir present their sixth annual NYE extravaganza, and American Horror Story/Todd Browning fans will appreciate this year’s theme. Alongside Carnavalesque’s line-up of kinky burlesque, go-go, circus and music performers, DJs include JNNBNNRCK, Davidé and your host Plastik Patrik.

NYE Hardstyle Massive

With international headliner DJs like NYC’s Lenny Dee and Miami’s Synoid, party buses being organized from NYC, Toronto and Ottawa and the promise of a 12-hour menu of bass music, electro, dub, drum & bass, psy trance and other banging subgenres of dance music spread out over three rooms, this sounds like an event for people who want to party as hard as humanly possible.

Merry Montreal is already bringing the festive fun to Old Montreal, and their outdoor NYE bash should be one for the books, with quality franco acts Alex Nevsky, Bernard Adamus and les Soeurs Boulay, DJ Ines Talbi & Abeille, a grandiose countdown and fireworks at midnight.

U.K. producer, recording artist and DJ Jon Hopkins headlines the third edition of Omisoka, a Samourais des Jungles Urbaines/I Love Neon/Igloofest/Evenko co-production that promises to be insane. Expect DJ sets by Purity Ring’s Corin Roddick, Com Truise, POMO and Harrison, a live set by TR/ST and more talent to be announced. Hosted by DL Jones.

If canapés and cocktails, a four-course dinner and live soul music sounds like your jam, check out Carlton J. Smith in this beautiful Mile End theatre. Fans of vintage soul should note that not only has Smith played James Brown in a movie, he opened for Brown and filled in for a string of dates when the Godfather of Soul passed away.
