8 great shows for your radar

Record launches, DJ nights, a music-scene roundtable, reliable punk rock and 21st century Brooklyn legends in Montreal this week.

facebook (379x464)Next week’s hump day heralds the start of the M for Montreal festival, but I’m chomping at the bit for the successive week when one of the best hardcore bands EVER will be in an opening slot. I’ll keep you on the edge of your seats until next Thursday’s column, but until then…

Thursday: Another night of cold wave, post-punk, synth pop, Italo Disco and more can be had at the ongoing Minimale Musique night at Katacombes with DJs Pappagiorgio, Cold Hands and László. 1635 St-Laurent, 10 p.m., free

If you were one of the lucky 15 or 20 people who actually got to see TV On the Radio utterly destroy the ill-fated venue El Salon a lifetime ago, you know not to miss them at the Corona Theatre with Natasha Kmeto. 2490 Notre-Dame W., 8 p.m., $25/$30

Friday: Speaking of gigs that happened a lifetime ago, Deerhoof at the POP Montreal HQ that happened a century ago was one of the ultimate all-time POP Montreal hits so don’t miss them at Piccolo Rialto with Priests and White Reaper. 5723 Parc, 9 p.m., $20/$23

One of Montreal’s gigginest musicians, Xarah Dion, launches her record Le Mal Nécessaire with a solo set from Automelodi, Besatzone and DJ Only Death Is Fatal at la Vitrola. 4602 St-Laurent, 8:30 p.m., $8

Saturday: Expozine is happening this weekend and a good start to your Saturday would be to make it down to Eglise St-Enfant Jesus to see a panel discussion called Montreal Blooming. The panel will feature producer/Bun E. Carlos enthusiast Howard Bilerman, musician Molly Sweeney and musician/producer Kevin Komoda in discussion about where the Montreal music scene has been and, more importantly, where it’s going. 5035 St-Dominique, 3 p.m., free

For a night of blazing metal/punk, check out Divebomber and (for my money) a band that remains one of Montreal’s true punk treasures, Vulgar Deli, at the comfy confines of Barfly. 4062 St-Laurent, 9 p.m., $5

The fine furry freaks at Pouzza have cooked up a night at TRH-Bar with the Slums, Sheldon Rourke and Belle Perruches. 3699 St-Laurent, 9 p.m., $5

Tuesday: Another free gig can be had at RIDM’s HQ, Agora du Coeur des Sciences de l’UQAM, with Big Brave, Caro Diaro, Elizabeth Anka Vajagic in experimental, improvisational and composed form. 175 Président-Kennedy, 10 p.m., free
