Art this week

Kent Monkman’s Urban Res opens tomorrow PLUS all the other vernissages, art festivals and gallery & museum events in Montreal.

Kent Monkman - Seeing Red (640x427)
“Seeing Red” by Kent Monkman

This week there are over a dozen new shows opening, plus a few ongoing festivals to take a look at. If you haven’t yet made it to the MAC yet for the Biennale, tonight would be a great time to check it out, as curator Lesley Johnstone is offering a guided tour this evening (Wednesday), from 7 – 8 p.m. Free for MACarte and Biennale Passport holders, otherwise regular MAC admission rates apply.

Thursday offers a slate of vernissages, with a big highlight being Cree artist Kent Monkman’s show Urban Res at Pierre-François Ouellette Art Contemporain. If a visit to the (ongoing) Égrégore show at Yves Laroche whetted your appetite for Pop Surrealism, you’ll find lots to appreciate about Monkman’s works depicting realities and struggles of modern, young indigenous people against a rather bleak urban backdrop. The figures who inhabit these streets are visited by some familiar symbols, from police helicopters to Hudson’s Bay blankets to Picasso’s cubist characters. Vernissage Thursday, Nov. 13, 6:30 – 8 p.m., 372 Ste-Catherine W., Suite #216

Also on Thursday, Station 16 invites you to a vernissage for their latest mashup of NYC and MTL artists, #NYCmeetsMTL, where you’ll find works by stars of both cities’ street art scenes including NYC artists like Cost, Dain, Deedee, Enzo Sarto alongside MTL favourites like Jason Botkin, Omen, Stikki Peaches and lots more. Vernissage Thursday, Nov. 13, 6 p.m., 3523 St-Laurent.

Saturday is a big day with several vernissages and events. At the top of our radar is a day-long series of events at SKOL in collaboration with the HTMlles Festival called Eros Frankenstein, including film screenings and performances, plus a talk by Audrey Laurin, inspired by the story of Frankenstein, on how we reconstruct the bodies we didn’t choose for ourselves. The day will end with a live-streaming of a performance just upstairs at Rats 9, in which artist Raphaële Frigon makes an anti-capitalist statement by implanting diamonds underneath her skin. Events from 2:30 – 8 p.m., 372 Ste-Catherine W., Suite #314. Schedule here

Since you’ll be in the neighbourhood, you could take a detour from SKOL at the Belgo to find a vernissage at VOX Centre de l’Image Contemporaine, presented in connection to the RIDM Documentary Film Festival, of work by James Benning, a key figure in avant-garde cinema. The retrospective opens with a vernissage on Saturday, and the filmmaker will conduct a workshop onsite on Sunday. Vernissage Saturday, Nov. 15, 3 – 6 p.m., 2 Ste-Catherine E., Suite #401

Marie Levac "Toi + Moi"

On Sunday, cat lovers of the world, unite and take over at Le repaire des 100 talents, as their new show Les Maîtres du Monde is all about our furry feline overlords. 28 artists are represented in this show, with cats stretching across the spectrum from realistic to cartoonish, folksy to surreal, with crazy cat ladies to mystical cat spirit guides. Vernissage Sunday, Nov. 16, 4:30 – 9 p.m., 5867 St-Hubert.

The above is just a sample of what’s going on in the arts scene this week, see the full listings below for more vernissages, closing shows, and ongoing shows to check out!
