Art this week

“Cacaolat” by Steven Orner

Fall is in full swing, and the suddenly chilly weather means you need to find your fun where there’s also a little shelter. There’s a great slate of vernissages happening at galleries and artist-run centres this week, plus last call on a number of closing shows. Here are some highlights:

The Leonard & Bina Ellen Art Gallery (1400 de Maisonneuve W.) has been organizing an ambitious and compelling program for Just Watch Me, an exploration of Québécois identity for generations affected by the events and continuing aftermath of the Quiet Revolution, as well as of the status of the artist as an actor provoking increased critical social consciousness. This dynamic series continues for another two weeks, and I highly recommend checking out their full slate of programming here. It includes film screenings, workshops, panel discussions and more food for thought.

On Wednesday, head to Galerie Bernard (3926 St-Denis) from 5–8 p.m. to see Steven Orner’s paintings portraying idyllic suburban life with a dystopian twist.

It’ll be hard to choose what to see on Thursday, when several different vernissages take place, but take note: The opening of the 32-artist group show Grandguignol at Usine 106U (160 Roy E) from 5–11 p.m. also serves as the launch of the third issue of Usine 106U’s house magazine, which you can take home for free.

Head to les Territoires (372 Ste-Catherine W. [Belgo Bldg #527]) on Saturday at 6 p.m. to see a group show of 45 emerging photographers who participated in this year’s Photoforum.

Saturday will also be a special opportunity to see a collection of works by prolific feminist graff artist Starchild Stela called I Can’t Take It Anymore at Café l’Artère (7000 Parc) from 3–5 p.m.

Artist-run centre DARE-DARE (Esplanade of St-Laurent Metro) presents While Walking, the culmination of a residency by Pohanna Pyne Feinberg. Take part in a walking tour with the artist while listening to recordings of interviews she conducted over the summer with seven Montreal artists whose work involves the act of walking. Departing at 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

On Sunday, get into the mood for Halloween with the group show Sympathy for the Devil at Le repaire des 100 talents (5867 St-Hubert) from 4:30–9 p.m.
