Art this week

From Packplay at UQAM

It’s another big Arts week in Montreal, with over twenty new shows opening all across town. Before we get to the highlights, take a moment to consider applying for Diagonale’s call for proposals for their upcoming micro-funding project, Soupée, which involves a dinner party for 30 guests who select a winner from three proposals, who will be awarded funding and inclusion in Diagonale’s programming. Proposals are due Sept. 19 and must involve fibers as a medium or a concept. For more information, check their website.

Now, for a few highlights of what’s happening this week. On Wednesday, take a look at at Packplay, an exhibit at UQAM’s Centre de Design (1440 Sanguinet) featuring innovative and award-winning intelligent packaging designs from universities around the world and their students of graphic, environmental, and industrial design.

Thursday at Art Mûr (5826 St-Hubert), three new exhibits will open, including Cal Lane’s Car Hoods and Stains, for which the artist has cut delicate lace patterns into discarded car hoods and used them to imprint the patterns in rust onto fabric sheets, a project that explores themes of mass production vs. hand-craft, strength vs. fragility and preservation vs. obsolescence.

Thursday also sees the 10th anniversary celebration at Eastern Bloc (7240 Clark) for ELAN (the English Language Arts Network), who have been providing resources and support for English-language Arts communities throughout Quebec since 2004. Cult MTL music critic, CKUT Underground Sounds host and Saxsyndrum member Nick Schofield will be the DJ, with lots of door prizes and other party perks on the agenda for the night.

On Friday, head to la Centrale Galerie Powerhouse (4296 St-Laurent) for a co-presentation with Art POP, a vernissage and artist talk with Travis McEwen for his portraiture exhibition Bowl Cuts and Rat Tail: A Radiant Heterotopia.

Saturday marks the end of Dazibao’s latest exhibit, Electronic Sound in a Shifting Landscape, and they’ll be hosting a closing night event with a performance at 9 p.m. with sounds by Total Life (Kevin Doria of Growing) and projections by filmmaker Karl Lemieux. 5455 de Gaspé #109
