Yesterday, Canadian techno giant Richie Hawtin announced that he would be playing an impromptu “dotUP” show on the esplanade of Places des Arts today. He’s in town for the EM15 (MUTEK + Elekta) festival, which also has a stack of free events happening today and through the week. 175 Ste-Catherine W., 5–7 p.m., free

After postponing the event due to rain yesterday, Poirier and Ghostbeard are ready to bring the noise back to Terrasse St-Ambroise today with the first edition of their summer monthly, Sud West — think beats, bass, BBQ & beer. The 19th edition of the Beaux Dégâts art battle features six teams of artists doing their thing live, with music by the High on Beats crew. Foufounes Electriques (87 Ste-Catherine E.), 7 p.m., $5
