Habs sweep round 1, fans party in the streets

Flag-waving, “ole ole” chanting, plastic Stanley Cup-hoisting and hollering rolled out of the Bell Centre and into the streets last night. See photos here.

The Montreal Canadiens beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 4–3 Tuesday night, completing their first-round series with a four-game sweep in the NHL playoffs.

Fans immediately bolted out of the Bell Centre to celebrate in the streets. Flag-waving, “ole ole”-chanting and plastic Stanley Cup-hoisting moved from the arena onto Ste-Catherine, and it was a peaceful party — a strong police presence prevented the kind of playoff mayhem we witnessed back in ’08.
