Godspeed and Neurosis will destroy the city

Six recommended shows and DJ gigs to pass the time till two nights of bone-shattering heaviosity leaves Montreal in dust.

facebookOf course, those of us who are into experimental rock and bone-shattering heaviosity are counting down the days until the co-headlining two-nighter with Godspeed You! Black Emperor and the almighty Neurosis. Although gb!ye are easily the best band to ever emerge from our burg, geezus — fucking Neurosis!!!! Just typing their name gives me goosebumps. If you’re wondering just how devastatingly heavy music can get, just type ‘em into your search engine and buckle up.

Leading up to these two nights that should go down in Montreal history, there are plenty of shows putting the sweat on the walls of our favourite watering holes:

Thursday: Notre Dame des Quilles DJ nights Sass War and Save Us join forces tonight. Expect the unexpected, from hip hop to metal to R&B to just about anything else. 32 Beaubien E., 10 p.m.

Down at Katacombes, you can catch a night of cold wave and Italo disco at the Minimale Musique night with DJ Personne and DJ Pappagiorgio (as in Moroder, natch). 1635 St-Laurent, 9 p.m.

My pick of the week goes to sweet guitar picker Glenn Jones, who headlines at Casa with support from Myriam Gendron and F Hood. Although Jones now calls Thrill Jockey his label home, dig back to his record Barbecue Bob in Fishtown on Strange Attractors to hear what this man can do with an acoustic and banjo. 4873 St-Laurent, 9 p.m.

Friday: For some classic Montreal ’80s new wave synth-pop, you can catch the return of Rational Youth at Casa, with the Tibaldos. 4873 St-Laurent, 9 p.m.

Saturday: For a night of minimalist punk rock, get to Barfly to check out Wrong Hole, headed up by stand-up comedian and ex-Brutal Knight Nick Flanagan, flanked by members of Teenanger and Quest for Fire. Openers are Vomit Squad and No Negative. 4062 St-Laurent, 9 p.m.

Wednesday & Thursday: Local institution Sam Shalabi returns to town to lead Land of Kush, who launches their new ‘un, Big Mango, at la Sala Rossa. Psychedelics are encouraged for this one. 4848 St-Laurent, 9 p.m.
